  • The Ringstrasse,  On Christmas Eve 1857, the Emperor Franz Josef I announced the demolition of the medieval walls surrounding the center of Vienna in order to build an imperial boulevard. This new boulevard was named the Ringstrasse and it serves as an expression of the glorious Habsburg Empire encircling the historical first district.
  • Stephansdom (St Stephan Cathedral) As a symbol of the Viennese identity, St. Stephan Cathedral sits in the center of Vienna serving as a beacon of historical and cultural importance. In 1945, more than 45 percent of this gothic style cathedral was destroyed after a fire spread to its roof. After rebuilding and restoration, this iconic site serves as a testament to the Viennese spirit.
  • Hitler in Vienna, originally from upper Austria, Hitler came to Vienna with hopes of being accepted into the art academy. After being denied twice and then living on the street he left Vienna only to return years later as Fuhrer of the Third Reich during the Anchluss of Austria to Germany. The Vienna Heldenplatz (Heroes Square) will go down in history as the scene of his speech to hundreds of thousands of cheering Austrians after the 1938 Anchluss or annexation, which confirmed Austria as part of the Third Reich.
  • Hofburg Palace & the Spanish Riding School (Spanische Reitschule) Another reminder of the Habsburg dynasty, the Hofburg palace sits next to the Ringstrasse in the first district. It is now home to a plethora of museums as well as the Spanish Riding School, which is home to the famous Lipizzaner horses that are trained in classical dressage.
  • Sacher Hotel is home to the famous Sacher Torte. A 16-year-old apprentice, the quick-witted Franz Sacher, originally created this delicious cake in 1832. This soft and fluffy chocolate cake has a tasty apricot jam under the icing, which is sure to cure any sweet tooth
